Job Title: 2026 IDS Summer Associate – Data Architect/Semantic Engineer
About the Role
This internship is an opportunity to work at the intersection of data architecture, semantic engineering, and data engineering in the pharmaceutical industry. You will help design and shape data products, a semantic context layer, and data marketplaces that power analytics and AI for teams across Commercial, Medical, Market Access, and other business functions.
You’ll collaborate with AI/ML engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders to define how critical healthcare provider (HCP), healthcare organization (HCO), patient, and market data is organized, connected, and delivered as reusable AI-ready data products.
What You’ll Do
1. Data Product Design & Delivery
• Contribute to the definition and design of reusable 360 data products (e.g., HCP, Patient, Payer).
• Help translate business and analytics requirements into technical data product specifications (schemas, SLAs, quality checks, documentation).
• Support profiling, validation, and basic transformation of data from multiple sources (e.g., CRM, claims, RWD, digital engagement).
• Assist in defining and documenting data contracts and interfaces (e.g., tables, views, APIs) for downstream consumers.
• Deliver reusable AI-ready designs via concept/logical/physical data models
2. Semantic Context Layer & Ontologies
• Help design and refine semantic models that describe core pharma entities and relationships (e.g., HCP–HCO–Patient–Payer–Account).
• Contribute to building a semantic/knowledge layer that provides business-friendly definitions, metrics, and relationships on top of raw data.
• Assist in mapping source data fields to standardized business concepts and ontologies (e.g., specialties, indications, product hierarchies).
• Participate in creating and maintaining business glossaries and data dictionaries.
3. Data Marketplace & Catalog Experience
• Support configuration and population of a data marketplace/catalog (e.g., registering data products, datasets, semantic objects).
• Help design and improve user-friendly metadata: descriptions, use cases, lineage, quality indicators, and access information.
• Contribute to mock-ups or simple prototypes for data product discovery and self-service consumption experiences.
• Gather feedback from internal users to enhance search, discovery, and documentation of data products.
4. Collaboration & Agile Delivery
• Work within a cross-functional agile squad with product, engineering, and business stakeholders.
• Participate in sprint ceremonies (stand-ups, planning, reviews) and contribute to backlog refinement.
• Prepare clear documentation, diagrams, and simple demos to explain the data products and semantic layer to non-technical stakeholders.
What You’ll Learn
During this internship, you will gain exposure to:
• How a modern pharmaceutical company uses data and AI to support HCP engagement, patient insights, and market access.
• Principles of data product thinking: treating data as a product with clear owners, users, SLAs, and value propositions.
• Designing semantic and canonical data models that power analytics and AI use cases at scale.
• Working with a cloud-based data platform and modern data tooling for ingestion, modeling, and cataloging.
• Collaborating in a product-oriented, agile technology organization.
Education
• Currently pursuing Masters or PHD intern candidate required
• Computer Science
• Data Science
• Information Systems
• Applied Mathematics / Statistics / Engineering with strong programming exposure
Technical Skills
• Proficiency in at least one programming language commonly used for data work (e.g., Python or SQL).
• Basic experience with data manipulation and analysis (e.g., using pandas, SQL, or similar tools).
• Familiarity with relational databases and data modeling concepts (tables, keys, joins, schemas).
• Exposure to cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and/or modern data tools (e.g., Databricks, Snowflake, BigQuery) is a plus.
• Interest in or exposure to:
• Data modeling (dimensional or entity-relationship modeling)
• Semantic modeling / knowledge graphs / ontologies
• Data catalogs, metadata management, or ML feature stores
Analytical & Product Mindset
• Ability to break down complex business questions into structured data and analytics requirements.
• Interest in user-centric design and product thinking (who uses the data, for what, and how).
• Curiosity about how data products drive measurable business and patient outcomes.
Soft Skills
• Strong communication skills: able to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
• Collaborative mindset and willingness to learn from teammates in different disciplines.
• Detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working with ambiguous or evolving requirements.
Nice-to-Have
• Coursework or projects involving:
• Data engineering, data warehousing, or big data systems
• Machine learning or applied analytics
• Knowledge graphs, graph databases, or semantic web technologies
• Prior internship or project experience in healthcare, life sciences, or pharma (not required).
Work Environment
• Work closely with data architects, AI engineers, and product managers in a hybrid business–technology setting.
• Access mentorship from senior team members and opportunities for learning sessions on pharma, AI, and data architecture.
• Engage in a capstone-style internship project (e.g., define and publish a new data product to the data marketplace, or prototype an enhancement to the semantic layer) and present results to stakeholders at the end of the internship.
