Novartis Institutes of BioMedical Research (NIBR) Cambridge
Design, build and deliver innovative tools that enable scientists to discover medicines that cure disease. A Co-op position is available in a cutting-edge biomedical research organization within one of world's largest pharmaceutical companies. The candidate will work directly with talented scientists to provide custom engineered solutions to help in the drug discovery process. We are looking for a bright, engaging and eager student to join our team at the Novartis Institute for BioMedical Research.

Custom Mechanical and Electrical Design (CMED) Group Mission Statement:
The CMED team, a subgroup of NIBR Informatics (NX), is chartered to provide centralized support for the realization of new and innovative technologies, enabling science and improving productivity at NIBR.

Key functions of the CMED team:
• Partner with biologists and chemists to provide novel technologies to enable drug discovery research
• Lead new technology implementation for lab/scientific workflows
• Deliver high quality, reliable robotic automation systems that meet complex customer requirements
• Optimize existing processes in customer's laboratories
• Provide technical project management for small-scale to enterprise-scale automated solutions
• Provide custom engineering services to create functional laboratory devices and equipment
• Bring ideas from concept to reality through an iterative, customer focused design process
• Fabricate custom parts and devices in-house
• Build communities and share best practices among technical and innovative researchers

Co-Op Responsibilities:
This individual will be responsible for various activities and services led by the CMED team, including:
• Independently manage various engineering projects; collaborate with biologists and chemists to advance drug discovery research
• Lead product engineering from concept through design, prototyping, and implementation
• Design and fabricate hardware for laboratory applications, using SolidWorks, 3D printing, and machining
• Support automation/robotics projects within drug discovery laboratories
• Understand and improve automated and manual laboratory processes
• Coordinate and support internal community groups
• Provide support for instrument evaluation and vendor management process

Required Capabilities and Experience:
• Interest in helping patients through contributions to drug discovery and laboratory robotics industries
• Demonstration of strong collaborative skillset, effective communication skills, and creative problem-solving abilities
• Demonstrated familiarity and interest in SolidWorks/CAD
• Interest or experience with cutting edge 3D printing technology (including FDM/SLA/DLP) required
• Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point required
• Ability to manage multiple projects, stay organized, and work independently
• Enrolled in Mechanical/Industrial/Bioengineering/Chemical Engineering or related degree program
• Previous co-op experience required

Preferred Capabilities and Experience:
• Experience in product design
• Formal project management experience
• Interest and/or experience with machining (mill, drill press, table saw, power tools etc.)
• Knowledge of LabVIEW, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Python, PLC
• Basic knowledge of laboratory safety, chemical hygiene, and good lab practices
• Experience or interest in biomaterials, microscale fabrication (PDMS casting), tiss

Location: Hybrid Cambridge, MA (4 days onsite)
Pay Rate: $32/hr based on experience and qualifications (W2 Only)
Contract: 3-month
