Job Description

  • Cleaning and disinfection of operational facilities and cage equipment.
  • Care and husbandry of laboratory animals.
  • Supporting research groups with animal experiments (e.g., administering medications, selecting, marking/identifying, euthanizing animals, etc.).
  • Compliance with hygiene regulations (hygiene concept/protocol).
  • Acts as a point of contact for laboratory personnel (e.g., regarding rodent housing, use of cage-changing stations, etc.).
  • Works in accordance with animal welfare legislation (laws and regulations).
  • Works according to Novartis SciOps/LAS quality guidelines (e.g., HSE, SOPs), hygiene regulations (hygiene concept), and instructions provided by supervisors and research groups.
  • Prepares laboratory animals for upcoming experiments according to laboratory staff instructions, ensuring availability at the requested location and time.
  • Transfers incoming animals to the animal facility, unpacks them according to instructions (animal welfare regulations, maximum number of animals per cage), and places them into appropriate housing cages.
  • Performs daily inspections of animals and cages; records room temperatures, humidity levels, general cleaning activities, unusual incidents, etc.
  • Reports sick or injured rodents to the veterinary service by telephone, email, or the designated reporting tool.
  • Euthanizes laboratory animals upon instruction from supervisors or researchers.
  • Conducts internal transport of animals and materials using a company vehicle (Category B driver's license).
  • Participates in LAS training events and/or continuously develops job-related skills through workplace training as required.

Minimum Requirements

  • One or more years of training as an animal care technician, or equivalent training.
  • LTK-1 module qualification is an advantage.
  • German and/or English (mandatory).
  • Experience handling small animals (various species and multiple aspects of laboratory animal breeding and husbandry).
  • Willingness to work weekends and holidays (Saturday/Sunday and public holiday shifts in a 365-day operation).
  • Willingness to work in a radioactive animal facility/unit (behavioral and safety training will be provided by Novartis).
