Principal Scientist I
Contribute to the GDC mission to discover innovative medicines

Key responsibilities
• Review and critically analyze data from project(s), identify complex problems and contribute to innovative and/or technological solutions (e.g. design and execution of experimental approaches and/or processes, complex syntheses and target molecules) to drive the success of project and/or progress projects across functions
• Intellectually contribute to and own the success of assigned projects (e.g. contribute to medicinal chemistry strategy, intellectual input to chemical serie(s) within project) and/or establish new methods and technologies (e.g. enlarging the scope of existing methodologies, collaborate with external equipment/technology providers) to own success of projects
• Broaden drug discovery understanding (e.g. medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, analytics, computational chemistry) and/or broaden understanding of related disciplines and emerging technologies (e.g. complementary analytical techniques, new discovery chemistry approaches, automation solutions, data handling)
• Perform own experimental work related to project objectives. Fully responsible for adherence to Novartis global standards (e.g. quality, safety, data security)
• Identify areas where own expertise can impact drug discovery
• Build a feedback culture by providing frequent constructive feedback to people you regularly interact with. Seek, listen to and act upon feedback
• Apply and share with others, latest developments in methods, technologies, and concepts within your area of expertise
• Contribute to the maintenance of state of the art skills, facilities and infrastructure (e.g. evaluation and implementation of new technologies, techniques, reactions and concepts) • Record concept statements and contribute to patent strategy within project team
• Share scientific topics and lessons learned in internal and external meetings and through publications
• Act as a role model for HS&E by supporting the awareness and culture within GDC and be accountable for the day-to-day management of HS&E matters in compliance with Novartis and other regulatory guidelines

GDC Job Descriptions
• Knowledge consistent with a PhD completed in chemistry / life sciences
• Demonstrate a good theoretical, practical and in-depth understanding of own scientific expertise including up-to-date knowledge of relevant literature
• Good understanding of the principles of medicinal chemistry and drug discovery (e.g. Up-to-date knowledge of synthetic chemistry, medicinal chemistry literature and understand biological/physicochemical assays used in the flow chart) and/or its interface with adjacent disciplines (e.g. synthetic technologies, analytics, automation, biotransformations).
• Demonstrates creativity, conceptual thinking and resourcefulness in applying new scientific methodologies and techniques and is recognized as an active contributor to scientific strategy, direction, and problem-solving
• Demonstrates full mastery of data sources, appropriate IT applications and institutional knowledge, to support project success
• Excellent oral and written communication skills including ability to deliver information (e.g. scientific presentations, development discussion, patents and publications)
• Ability to set priorities, good planning and time management skills
• Ability to make informed decisions based on sound judgment

• Collaborate and closely interact across Novartis and/or external partners on project activities and/or technology developments. Report results, persuade and influence peers.
• Act as a mentor/coach/leader who supports, guides, and develops other scientists
• Proactively share knowledge with other scientists

• Support Novartis, BR and GDC initiatives

Location: Emeryville, CA (Onsite)
Pay Rate: $80 - $106/hr based on experience and qualifications (W2 Only)
Contract: 18 months
